Ski mountaineering in Bormio and Alta Valtellina

In Bormio, ski mountaineering is the most authentic way to connect with the mountains.

Here you experience the climb step by step, with significant elevation gains, silent forests and views that gradually open up as you ascend. It's not just about the descent, but about the route, the pace and awareness.

If you are looking for an experience that combines training, freedom and respect for the environment, Bormio is the place where climbing and skiing find a natural balance.

It is precisely from this way of experiencing ski mountaineering that a new project takes shape: an initiative designed to promote climbing in a conscious and integrated way with the ski area, offering ski mountaineers a dedicated and structured experience.

Ski Mountaineering at Bormio 2000

A new trail on the snow of Bormio Ski, born from a magnificent project: Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails.

Four new routes, perfect both for beginner ski mountaineers and for the more experienced ones: Bormio 2000 – La Rocca, Valdisotto/Forte di Oga – San Colombano, Santa Caterina Valfurva – Plaghera, and Valdidentro/Rasin – Cuna Alta, created in collaboration with the Lift Companies of the Bormio ski area, the Municipalities, and various local organizations.

Thanks to the work of a team of experts who constantly monitor snow conditions and trail accessibility, the four Stelvio Natural Skimo Trails offer the opportunity to safely explore the splendid snowy landscapes of the Bormio valleys, climbing in the silence of nature and enjoying the descent on the ski area slopes of Bormio—where in 2026 ski mountaineering will make its absolute debut as an Olympic discipline at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games.

Bormio 2000 - La Rocca Skimo Trail

In Bormio, the new ski mountaineering route winds almost entirely through the forest. It begins at the top station of the Bormio 2000 gondola and climbs up to the Chalet La Rocca and I Rododendri restaurants.

Beyond this section of the trail, more experienced ski mountaineers can choose to continue along a closed slope that connects La Rocca (2,166 m) to Cimino (2,630 m). Once at the summit, the descent takes place on the ski slopes. Among the options of the Bormio ski area is the legendary Stelvio slope, stage of the epic challenges between the greatest alpine skiing champions.
