Bormio 2026: Olympic infrastructure and works related to the event

Stelvio Olympic Ski Centre

At the foot of the Stelvio slope, the Stelvio Olympic Ski Center has been built, a facility dedicated to athletes, staff, and services for international competitions.
The facility houses a Family Lounge and Hospitality Lounge and is designed according to energy sustainability criteria, with solutions such as photovoltaics and biomass.
A permanent space, created by SIMICO (Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2020-2026 S.p.A.), intended to host sporting events and activities even after the Games.

Enhancement of programmed snowmaking

SIMICO has installed a new artificial snowmaking system on the Stelvio slope to ensure reliable snow coverage even in difficult weather conditions. New generators and systems ensure continuity and safety on the slopes.

Advanced snowmaking and water storage reservoir

At high altitude, ARIA S.p.A. (Regional Agency for Innovation and Procurement) has built a storage reservoir integrated with an advanced snow management system: controlled production, digital sensors, and optimization of water and energy resources.
This technical solution is linked to the Olympic event and the operational management of the ski area.

New Ski Lifts

SIMICO plans to build a new ski lift connecting Ciuk and La Rocca during the 2026/27 season.

At the same time, Bormio Ski plans to relocate the four-seater chairlift temporarily connecting the “Fontanalonga” vehicles, which will replace the current permanent three-seater chairlift “Pian dei Larici.”

The replacement of the chairlift meets SIB S.p.A.'s objective of increasing the competitiveness of the ski area and ensuring high standards of service for the many users who visit the Bormio ski area during the winter season, with positive repercussions on the economic and social fabric of the tourist resort. The project was developed with particular attention to environmental and landscape aspects, through the adoption of design solutions based on sustainability criteria.

The new lift will enable a significant increase in hourly capacity: from 1,800 people/hour at the current Pian dei Larici station to 2,400 people/hour, significantly reducing waiting times and ensuring a smoother service, even during peak periods.
The increase in operating speed, equal to 5.0 m/s, reduces travel time to approximately 3 minutes, compared to almost 7 minutes with the current system.

The design solution adopted will improve the overall quality of the service: the new-generation vehicles guarantee a high level of comfort thanks to their ergonomic geometry and comfortable seats, equipped with “kid stops” for transporting children, as well as a boarding carpet with photocells to detect the presence of skiers.

The lift will also feature a new motor, called DirectDrive, without any transmission mechanism, with the output shaft connected directly to the pulley, offering advantages in terms of quietness, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
