About us

Bormio Ski is The Vertical Fun

Welcome to the official website of Bormio Ski: a company founded back in 1966. Over the years we have annually hosted the World Cup Downhill and we have been the house of the Alpine Ski World Cup in 1985 and 2005.

Our mission

Bormio Ski has been a ropeway company since 1966. We want people to live the mountain and feel free, happy and entertained.

Our vision

A connected ski area with the neighbouring stations and able to offer distinctive products and services, located along the remarkable vertical drop of our mountain.

Bormio Ski: a stunning vertical drop

Bormio Ski is in Northern Italy, in the region Lombardia, in the heart of the Italian Alps. Our company runs a ski area with 50 km of slopes served by functional and modern lifts.

Bormio is currently able to satisfy both the demanding skier with competitive level slopes like the Stelvio – World Cup capital of Men Downhill – and the rookie with pistes of medium difficulty and training camps.

The vertical drop of the ski area is absolutely stunning. Bormio Ski is The Vertical Fun: a 1,800 m-nosedive from Cima Bianca (3,012 m) to Bormio (1,225 m).

In addition, making snow is our passion: the modern artificial snow system is ready to start at any time to guarantee snow on 80 % of the slopes! In 2005 Bormio Ski hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup and for the first time in the history of skiing all the races were run on artificial snow only.

When the ski resort turns into a theme park on the snow

Our history, made of sports at 3,000 meters, all year round

In Bormio the first ski lifts appeared in the 50s, from town level (1,225 m) to Ciuk (1,650 m). In 1966 the industrial manager Walter Fontana located the mountain Vallecetta from 2000 to 3000 meters as the perfect skiable zone for Bormio’s future. The higher elevation represented a better guarante for snow coverage. The first company of ski lifts in Bormio was born: SIB.

The first important job was the construction of the road that linked Bormio to Bormio 2000. In 1968 the first lift was built: the cablecar Bormio 2000 – Cima Bianca, still working, and many other followed.

In 1970 a second cablecar was activated (Bormio-Bormio 2000) and the hotel-restaurant “Girasole” was constructed. Bormio was able to prove itself as one of the most famous winter resort of the Alps.

In 1984 SIB took over another local lift company buying their lifts and building the cableway Bormio – Ciuk, essential to host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985. From that time on the growth of the company has been unstoppable.

In 2001 three local businessmen bought the block of shares from the Fontana’s family.

In 2005 SIB hosted for the second time the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and on this occasion it changed radically the structure of the ski area for what concerned new lifts (the cableway Bormio-Bormio 2000 and three high-speed quads), new and wide slopes, a snowpark and a new and more powerful snowmaking system.

In 2011 SIB changed look with a complete process of rebranding creating a new brand: Bormio Ski through which the company communicates all the corporate activities. In the era of web 2.0 the company can’t do without social networks and it is on the web where the company grows a profitable and mutual relationship with its clients.

In 2013 the cablecar Bormio 2000-Cima Bianca has been totally renewed and renamed “Whitelady3000”.

In the summer of 2014 the company opened a new bike park, named “Bormio Bike Park“, with mtb trails for cross country, freeride and downhill and a qualified mtb rental.

In the winter 2018/2019 Bormio Ski launched a new concept: the ski resort turning into a theme park on the snow. Services for families are the main focus and the new attractions of the Funslope represent the perfect match.

24 June 2019 is probably the most memorable date in all our history. In that day, IOC entitled Italy to host the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Stelvio slope was chosen to be the venue of all the men alpine ski races.

Let the story continue…

  • Best Pists Ever
If you want the longest runs you simply must go here. There are so many pists you can just keep exploring it is endless. Even with low snowfall this was the best snowboarding trip I've ever had. Navigate through the lifts to the top (above 3000 m) and get yourself a photo before you hit the steepest drop of your life! It is just under your feet as you arrive. Don't look at it just do it !

  • Great ski area
Easily accessible ski area for all types. Slopes are wide, variable and challenging depending on conditions; snow making generally good. There are plenty of bars/restaurants on the slopes and the prices are considerably cheaper than France! Tea and Prosecco cost virtually the same! Both 2000 and 3000 are accessible for non skiers via the bubble and cabin. We took some time off for snow shoeing and there are also fat tyre bikes for the snow. Lifts are generally uncrowded and efficient, also have covers for cold/ bad weather.

  • Fantastic Italian skiing
Superb skiing on uncrowded slopes. Very interesting terrain with fantastic views. Mostly very good blues and reds with the occasional very good black. Some very good offpiste in the freeride zones. Very good mountain restaurants with generally good staff.
